How to register a database in the MS-Windows Open Data Base Connectivity (ODBC) data source
- Go to the "ODBC Data Source Administrator" window. To reach this window form the MS-Windows desktop select:
- in MS-Windows 95/98/NT4.0
- Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Data Sources (ODBC)
- in MS-Windows 2000
- Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Data Sources (ODBC)
- in MS-Windows XP
- Start --> Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Data Sources (ODBC)
- Double clicking the "Data Sources (ODBC)" icon, the "ODBC Data Source Administrator" window appears (Figure 1).

In the "System DSN" panel of the window, click the "Add..." button and choose from the appeared list (Figure 2) the adequate driver for the type of database you want to register (e.g. "Driver Microsoft Access (*.mdb)" for a MS-Access database).

Clicking the "Finish" button, the "ODBC Setup" window for the selected driver appears (Figure 3). In this window, type a name for the database to register (e.g. DBgene) in the "Data Source Name" field. Then click the "Select..." button and select in the file system of the opened window the database file to register (e.g. the "DBgene.mdb" file in the "MyWEST/data" directory).

Click the "OK" button both in the opened window and in the "ODBC Setup" window to complete the registration. In the "ODBC Data Source Administrator" window, a new line with the defined data source name and its selected driver will appear (Figure 4).
